ROY LICHTENSTEIN

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ROY LICHTENSTEIN!
(Yesterday, October 27, 1923)

I had the pleasure of meeting him in 1995 at Gemini G.E.L. in Los Angeles. He was a very sweet and frail man. I almost didn't notice him because he didn't command a lot of attention. (It was a small opening for Robert Rauschenberg  - Dennis Hopper, David Byrne and a few other celebs were there as well.)

I asked him if he would sign a card for me. He happily obliged and carefully wrote out his long name. Then he looked at it for a moment and said oh, let me do that over and got another card and wrote out his name again. He liked this version better. He gave me both. (They looked identical.)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB!
OCTOBER 22, 1925

He had a great smile and was a lovely person. Rare with great artists. These are a few of the photos I have of the several times I met him. His great art had a profound impact on me pursuing my own career in fine art.

One time a group of us were standing with Mr Rauschenberg outside the Bobbie Greenfield Gallery (when it was in Venice) when someone asked him what was the one thing that might sum up what he thought was necessary to be a great artist and he said after thinking for just a moment... "everything you see is important." I thought to myself what a great answer.

Also a few pics I took of Bob Rauschenberg and David Hockney clowning around....

MY FULL PAGE AD IN THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY ISSUE OF ARTFORUM MAGAZINE

September 1993 -
I took out a full page ad in ARTFORUM magazines's 30 year anniversary issue (1993- pre web sites, when fax machines ruled the day.) I had great placement, page 84 of 230 pages. The ad before mine was an Andy Warhol ad. The ad I shared the spread with was John Cage's show at MOCA. (Rollywholyover)
